What Kind Of Drugs Are Cannabis

Marijuana is made from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. The main psychoactive (mind-altering) chemical in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.

Drugs That Fit Into This Category Include

Prescription

Sativex: Currently used to treat spasticity (muscle spasms and stiffness) caused by multiple sclerosis

Marinol: FDA-approved for the treatment of nausea in patients undergoing chemotherapy

Cesamet: Treats nausea in chemotherapy patients

Non-Prescription

Marijuana: Greenish-gray mixture of dried shredded leaves. Stems, seeds, and/or flowers.

Concentrates: A marijuana concentrate is a highly potent THC- (Tetrahydrocannabinol) concentrated mass that looks like honey or butter.

Dabbing: A dab usually refers to a dose of concentrate that is heated on a hot surface, usually a nail, and then inhaled through a dab rig.

Vaping: The heating of cannabis without burning. The heat releases the active ingredients into a vapor that is then released into the air in a fine mist created by a vaporizer device. Since combustion does not occur, smoke is not created.

Mooking: Smoking tobacco and marijuana together in the bowl of a pipe is known as mooking. The chemicals of tobacco and marijuana work on the nervous system and affect both the mind and the body.

Spice or K2: Smoking tobacco and marijuana together in the bowl of a pipe is known as mooking. The chemicals of tobacco and marijuana work on the nervous system and affect both the mind and the body.

Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) Public Health Concerns

  1. Studies show that people with a history of marijuana use have a 2.76 times greater likelihood of initiating opioid use than non-users and a 2.52 times greater likelihood of transitioning to opioid misuse or dependence than non-users. These findings suggest that marijuana use typically precedes the use of opioids. [1]

  2. High potency marijuana (17.1% THC in 2017) and the use of marijuana pastes, gummies and vapes is associated with depression and impaired cognitive function. [2]

  3. Studies indicate that higher THC dosage causes greater memory impairment and psychotic-like symptoms. [3]

  4. Use of high potency marijuana is associated with a moderate elevation in the likelihood of generalized anxiety disorder. [4]

  5. A cross-sectional study of 539 California cities and counties found that key public health recommendations and lessons learned from tobacco control to reduce demand and prevent youth marijuana use have generally not been adopted. [5]

  6. 1 in 6 marijuana users who start young will become addicted to marijuana. [7]

  7. Recreational marijuana commercialization is associated with a 67% to 77% increase in calls to poison control centers for marijuana exposures relative to pre-legalization. The increase associated with commercialization was higher among minors than adults. [8]

  8. The American Automobile Association (AAA) found that 18% of drivers in Washington state tested positive for THC after a fatal crash between 2013 and 2017, compared to just 8.8% from 2008 to 2012.[9] Additionally, 14.8 million drivers report driving within 1 hour after using marijuana in the last 30 days. [10]

  9. Driving under the influence of marijuana is associated with a 110% increase in fatal crashes. [11]

  10. People who used marijuana heavily in their teens and continued through adulthood saw a permanent 8-point drop in IQ. [12]

  11. Studies show that teenagers who use marijuana weekly or daily have a 159% greater risk of recurrent psychotic-like experiences. [13]

  12. Chronic marijuana use reduces dopamine release in the brain, causing depression, poor memory, inattention and impaired learning performance. [14]

  13. College students with high levels (17 days/month) of marijuana use were twice as likely as those with minimal use (less than 1 day/month) to have an enrollment gap while in college (e.g., drop out or not graduate on time). [16]

  14. Marijuana use increases workplace injuries, accidents, disciplinary problems and absenteeism. [18]

  15. Marijuana is the most common substance present in suicides among adolescents aged 10-19. [19]

  16. Research also shows that marijuana policy changes affect youth use and consumption rates. Past-month marijuana use among 12-17-year-olds is 54.5% higher in states where marijuana is “legal” than for youth aged 12-17 in “non-legal” states. [20]
